Pollution and Mankind

Any abnormal change in chemical, physical and biological characteristics of environment is called pollution. The bio-sphere and the ecosystem are self-sustaining. Nature maintains a balance in land, water, air and all the living organisms in the world.

Any imbalance therein causes a chain reaction leading to environment pollution. Man is going to conquer the universe with the help of technological developments, but this development has resulted in grave danger to the very existence of man. Today the air is becoming foul, water is no longer clean and forests are being cut down. If this continues, air and water would become unfit for use of all living beings. The problem of pollution has thus become very serious in recent years.

Environment problem is a direct consequence of industrial progress. It is, therefore, more pronounced in large industrial belts. In these areas, the air gets polluted by the exhausts from automobiles and furnaces, industrial soot’s, emission of smoke from factories etc. Decomposition of garbage and other refuse make the atmosphere heavy. Large scale accumulation of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide thus takes place in the air we breathe. Green forests purify air, but with random felling of trees, the percentage of these highly poisonous gases in the air increases. All these cause great damage to the health of living creature. With development of industries, large amount of industrial and municipal wastes are discharged into rivers or lakes without any treatment. Thus water gets polluted with toxic chemicals resulting in the death of marine lives. Emissions from refineries float on seas destroying marine lives and coastal vegetation wherever it strikes.

Food pollution is another problem that we have to face today. Use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides pollute the plants, vegetable and agricultural products we consume. Noise pollution is another from of hazard that inflicts a great damage upon human beings. The latest addition to environmental pollution comes from nuclear explosions. Nuclear explosions and radio active wastes pollute the atmosphere to an extent beyond imagination.

So, the air we breathe, the food we take and the water we drink are not always healthy or safe. To generate awareness about pollution, the United Nations observe 5th June every year as the World Environmental Day to evolve fruitful possibilities of international collaboration to solve this global problem. Sensing danger, steps have been taken to root out the causes of pollution. People are being encouraged to plant more trees to purify air. Smokeless fuels are used for general consumption. Laws have been enforced to treat the effluents first before discharging them to rivers or lakes. Strict measures are taken to prevent emission of smoke from chimneys and vehicles. Heavy penalties are imposed for violating the antipollution measures. Pollution Control Boards have been set up in each state to look all aspect of pollution. Scientists are now taking steps to isolate and eliminate radioactive elements from the nuclear wastes which are a real danger to mankind.

The price of pollution could be the death of mankind. So, we must take every step to save this planet from environmental pollution.
